Greetings.

I have been reading about Bitcoin on the internet, even bought a book about it, but I still can’t understand how it works. Because of that I decided to go through embarrassment of asing directly to people with more knowledge and xp about it.

Some questions that I have, I hope somebody can enlight me:

1 – If the bitcoin never actually leaves the network, how can you buy or pay with it?

2 – The wallets, there are hot (online) and cold (offline), but they don’t keep the bitcoins, they just keep the passfrases? If yes, how can you transfer satoshis or coins from one to another?

3 – Is the only way to have bitcoins by using wallets or can I create something in the actuall network and operate there?

4 – I understand that’s not something you can use for gambling or trade, but as a reserve of value for the long run (some people even say for the entire life pass generations), but how can it be useful in the real world? If you have dolars, you can invest it and take passive income. If you have gold, it values considerably fast and is accepted everywhere, but what about bitcoin? It seems to me you buy it from a broker, stock it and never use it because it’s not accepted anywhere, some people even laugh you talk about it.

To help answer some of your questions high level:

Correct that bitcoin never “leaves” the network. All bitcoin exists.. on the bitcoin network. When you buy/pay, think of it like owning access to an address (wallet) instead. When I buy bitcoin, I put it into a wallet that’s mine (on the bitcoin network). When I pay/transfer, I send that bitcoin to another wallet of someone/something else (also on the bitcoin network).
Correct, wallets don’t “hold” bitcoin, just a cryptographic signature that was created from your passphrase (password); this passphrase is what enables you to control your sats – held in a wallet – on the bitcoin network. When you transfer (acquire more or send) sats from your wallet to another, your passphrase (cryptographic signature that ONLY you control) is what verifies and permits the movement of those sats. That’s part of the bitcoin protocol itself, that nodes verify and miners make happen.
To keep this answer easy, yes. The only way to “have” bitcoin is by having a wallet (which really means having the passphrase that enables the cryptographic signature to that wallet).
Great question, and well beyond the scope of a simple reddit response. Simply put, keep researching, I 100% promise you’ll easily find more than you can imagine. This topic has, and continues to be a major public education issue that folks think there are no use cases for bitcoin other than holding. It’s just completely wrong.
