What’s the smartest business to start today with $50k–75K?
I’m 18 and looking to start a serious business with a budget of $50K–$75K. I’m not interested in quick flips or side hustles. I want something solid and long-term. Ideally, a real business with a physical location, employees, and room to scale into something valuable over time.
I’m open to service-based businesses, logistics, local franchises, or anything with strong demand and growth potential. I don’t mind if the business isn’t flashy, as long as it’s serious and profitable.
If you’ve started something like that or have ideas, I’d really appreciate your input.
Thanks!

There’s a million different opportunities. Most are viable.
At 18 you basically have no experience. There’s nothing wrong with that, and even a few advantages. But you also don’t know what you don’t know – which means you have no reference points or internal compass to give you a sense of what’s worth pursuing, when to quit, what traction actually looks like… etc.
What I strongly suggest is this: Once you find a business that seems to resonate, go find your best future competitors (whoever is nailing it, growing fast, etc), put your ego on the shelf, and GO WORK FOR THEM.
Maybe for a year. Maybe for a few. Specifically, try to get exposed to the strategy side of the business. Understand where their customers actually come from. What they’re *actually* selling (it’s not as simple as you think). How they incentivize their team. How they actually make money (again, not as straightforward as you might think). Etc etc.
I absolutely guarantee you that this “time out” in the beginning will put you so much further ahead when you go to start your own business…. though by then, you won’t even realize it, since you’ll have a totally different reference point.
Last, I say this as a 41 yo entrepreneur that’s built multiple 6 & 7 figure companies. I would be so, so much further ahead today if I had intentionally sought to educate myself by first working for an established company in my desired market space for a few years, to truly learn first hand how the sausage gets made – all the while getting paid for the privilege.
You’ll probably ignore this and write me off as an old fogey and think that you’re the exception. That’s fine, I would too. In fact, I did think that.
But here’s hoping.
Best of luck regardless.
P.S. As to what businesses are profitable? Join a bunch of local newsletters in your area and pay attention to who’s consistently advertising, sponsoring stuff, doing community events, etc. Just keep your eyes open.
You only do that if you’re growing, and if you’ve hit it off with your business model. Let that guide you from there 🙂

I have found reddit to be possibly the worst place to ask these questions.
You pretty much always get the same answer.
regardless, someone always says ” vending machines” and ” pressure washing”
There is usually at least one comment of “poop scoopin” usually by someone selling poop scoop courses or franchise in their profile.
200 people saying ” what you enjoy”
And a handful of sarcastic comments and ” buy my course for 10k and I’ll tell you!”
and a few semi serious comments mentioning trades.
I’ve read through about every one of these posted, probably a thousand post total, as I am in the process of attempting to transition more into small business as well as I get older ( I’m already a middle-aged man at this point, but still) And it’s always the same, mostly unhelpful answers.
I’m not saying that this comment is any more helpful, but I would try to find non-reddit business forums, or even just local small business councils as opposed to looking on reddit from what I have gathered.
