Is the cost of living really that bad in the UK?

I see a lot of posts on here complaining that the cost of living makes residing in the UK near-impossible.

I don’t want to sound like I’m boasting or anything like that, but I’ve never really found it that bad? Granted, I am on about £22,000 per year, which might be a lot, but it’s also pretty ordinary. I have a flat and can pay my bills and still have some disposable income left over.

Maybe it’s because I don’t have kids and that I live outside of London??

I’m on £20k living in london.

Live in a flat share, can’t eat out every week, but I still have money to eat well, relax and even save a little each month.

I think if you spend all day on social media seeing other people live extravagant lifestyles, you may get jealous and angry that you can’t afford that lifestyle. But if you live within your means and take care to enjoy what you have got, it’s not at all bad.

Would rather be poor in a western country than rich in a developing country.

How much of that are you putting towards your mortgage deposit and pensions? I’m guessing it’s not a lot? And that’s the problem – just living day-to-day is so expensive these days, we can’t afford to think about our future needs. Unlike our parents, who drove house prices up so stupidly high, they shut their own kids out of the housing market.
